A new news feed available for iPads called “News.me” is soon to be released. This new application gives suggestions as to what you might be interested in looking at and reading through based on your previous searches. However, it not only allows you to see what might be interesting for you, but also what your friends are interested in. The News.me “stream” will allow users to also look through full articles and images from different news sources, and save articles in a “reading list.” The News.me streams will be completely based on what you search.
The new application works with Twitter, therefore users will need a Twitter account to use it. News.me uses Twitter because it takes information about the articles and people you research to start creating your News.me feed. The News.me feed will then begin producing a bunch of stories that it believes you would be interested in reading. The “User Dock,” a feature of News.me, will then display others who use the application. From this, you can click on a user and read his or her News.me stream.
Some of the publishers who work with New.me to create the news that a user will see are The New York Times, Associated Press,AOLNews, and more. To view these articles, the application costs $.99 per week to use, or users can pay $34.99 for an annual subscription.
While it may seem like an invasion of privacy for others to view what you are interested in viewing, it is possible to turn off your News.me stream so only you can view it. The new application may be useful for suggesting stories that we would be interested in, but is it still an invasion of privacy if programs like these are tracking what we are reading and looking through in order to create news that we are interested in? It is definitely a new and interesting application to look into.
